Based on the Trinity Study's 4% Rule: FIRE number = annual expenses ÷ withdrawal rate. The portfolio grows year-by-year at the real return (nominal return − inflation), with your annual investment added, until it crosses the target. A 4% withdrawal rate has historically sustained portfolios for 30+ years across most market scenarios (Bengen 1994; Cooley et al. 1998).
